The Event

Assessments are one of the foundational tools in coaching and there are a myriad in the marketplace. Particularly for those new to coaching, understanding the uses of specific assessments and differences between the different tools can be a lot to navigate. And, for experienced coaches, there is always an interest in expanding our toolkits. At the same time, assessments can be costly, particularly where certification for use may be required, so having more familiarity with options in the marketplace can help prioritize your learning and investment objectives. The 2020 Assessments Cafe will give you a deep knowledge of 4 very powerful assessment tools in use today.  Come learn how these assessments can support your coaching engagements!

Note on the presentations:  This event is being presented by ICF Members, not the assessment company representatives. None of the presenters are representatives of or have any business interests in the assessment they are sharing.  We asked members what assessments they are using and which they wanted to learn about. Our presenters volunteered to share their authentic perspective on the assessments that they like to use.   This gives participants a “real world” view of how hired coaches are using these assessments and what value the assessments results bring to their clients. Inclusion of the assessments in the program does not represent an endorsement by ICF NYC. Assessments to be presented include:

BrainStates Awareness Profile© presented by Jamie B. Gelbtuch

The BrainStates Awareness Profile© is a tool that provides insight into brain state tendencies and whether you tend to operate out of the reptilian (survival), limbic (emotional), or neocortex (analytic) areas of the brain.  The assessment consists of a brief questionnaire completed on the website www.brainskillsatwork.com, which immediately produces a personalized report analyzing your score according to seven neuroscience-based dimensions. The report is divided into two parts.  The first part helps you understand your own brain tendencies, particularly around the areas of advancing inclusion, communication/trust, and effective decision-making.  The second part focuses on strategies for improving performance along seven key neuroscience dimensions: Thinking / Meta Cognition, Brain Energy, Attention Positivity, Physical Body / Physiology, Actions / Behaviors, Shifting BrainStates, and Underlying Beliefs.

Profile XT Select© presented by Adam Mirabella

The Profile XT Select is a job hiring and coaching tool.  It has 3 major parts to the assessment:

  1. Thinking style – How one processes and communicates verbal and analytical information

  2. Behavioral traits – The DNA of how someone approaches work, decisions, dialogs.  The nine traits are: Pace, Assertiveness, Sociability, Conformity, Outlook, Decisiveness, Accommodation, Independence and Judgement

  3. Interests – What keeps people motivated and satisfied

What differentiates Profile XT Select from other quadrant style assessments such as DISC is that it is “normative” and everyone who takes this assessment can see how they stand on a normal bell curve.  This helps understand where your client has outlying thinking style or behaviors.  This leads to great self-awareness which builds emotional intelligence.

Hogan Assessment © presented by Julie Johns

The Hogan Assessments were developed in the 1980’s based on the science of personality for business purposes by psychologists Drs. Joyce and Robert Hogan.  The Hogan Assessments are research based, highly reliable and valid instruments based on over 30 years of use.  These assessments are often used for job selection and leadership development. There are 3 assessments:

  1. Hogan Personality Inventory – Describes the bright side of the personality or how we relate to others when we are at our best.

  2. Hogan Development Survey – Describes the dark side of the personality or qualities that emerge when we are under stress.

  3. Motives, Values, Preferences Inventory – Describes our core values and drivers that determine what we desire and strive to attain.

DISC Assessment © presented by Cherise Myers

The DiSC® assessment model provides a common language for people to enhance their understanding of self. DiSC® provides an opportunity to acknowledge and adapt behaviors which can help shift our interactions with others at work, at home and in our community.

The DiSC® profiles can help executives and teams to:

  • Enhance Emotional Intelligence: shift the response to conflict, manage stress and solve problems

  • Improve working relationships: recognize the communication needs of self and others

  • Develop customer service skills: identify and enhance the response to customer needs/styles

  • Manage more effectively: understand priorities of the board, colleagues and team members
